Elephant & Castle Shopping Complex, London- Study, London

PROJECT BRIEF

The Elephant & Castle Shopping Complex is located on a large road intersection of London and enjoys high level of connectivity by underground trains, mail trains and bus connections. Yet, the Shopping Complex has turned into an informal market. An analysis of the socio economic factors affecting the complex as well as the building design throw light on why the building could not continue the use for what it was designed:

  • The sunken floor level of front facade and non-performing shop fronts prevent interaction between the complex and viewers.
  • The wide internal street- like corridors lead to higher activation of internal facades, turning the building inwards, and further limiting interaction with outside viewer.
  • The ethnic and economically backward communities in vicinity also encourages establishment of informal shops within and around the complex.

This study strengthens the belief that socio-economic factors have an extremely high impact on the buildings. Further, it reinforces the need for building designs that can adapt as per requirement and use.
